Font goodness

From one of my favourite web sites ( fontshop.com ) comes the latest FontBook type catalogue.

Just like the right photograph, the right font can make or break any piece of graphic design. I love these font catalogues and can easily spend hours browsing through hundreds of pages of Serif, Sans serif, Gothic, Display, Blackletter and Slab fonts just to find the right typeface for a graphic design project. Unfortunately, typography on the web isn’t as versatile as it is in the printed world and that’s something I still miss about designing web sites. Still, these book are gorgeous pieces of graphic design in themselves and a great reference tool for a logo I’ve just been comissioned to design.

I love how FF Meta Serif looks in print. I do agree that if you love type that these books are nice to look at.

Btw, your flash titles don’t work for me for some reason. I’m using firefox and have flash installed. Just thought I’d let you know.

What software is there out there to design one’s own logo (including font for logo?)

Hi Jeff. I agree - Meta Serif is a gorgeous font.

I was a big fan of the DAX font family for a while but it became very trendy very quickly and noticed it on everything from McDonalds signage to Morrissons Supermarket signage which kind of ruined it’s appeal for me!

BTW - thanks for flagging the Flash Titles problem. I’m running Firefox and Flash here myself and see no probs but I’ll look into it further. Do they display correctly for you on IE?

@Eamon - Adobe Illustrator tends to be my favourite for designing logos. It’s fast, vector-based and has a great suite of tools. If you’re talking about creating your own typeface then I think Corel or Adobe have a product for that but I’d seriously consider commisioning a professional designer for a logo design.
